Roanna Heller mentions an essential point in her essay, and that is to have a full on experience, we sometimes need a variety of methods of expression. Reading text alone isn’t engaging enough for a spacial learner, or an individual relying on spatial intelligence. Listening to instruction alone isn’t enough for a visual learner. Different disciplines or fields entail different requirements that are usually not enough. As if they are slow to evolve. Education is associated with criterion, guides and rules. Thus making the process of a learner dull, and difficult for different learners. Since Heller decided to study art, she integrated methods, and had the freedom to do so. Her cityscapes were accompanied by an ethnographic approach, because all elements of expression complement each other. Humans like to see, touch, smell and think! Beauty coexisting with knowledge is grand. It illuminates the mind. Information alone can be dull sometimes. We look through lenses, and sometimes it doesn’t just have to be theory lens, but it also could me through a visual lens, like in photography, or having a glimpse of the artist’s imagery through paintings or drawings. I have difficulty, for instance, understanding deconstructionism. It only made sense to my head when I started visualizing the theory’s explanation. Different skills, and mind intelligence, can enhance one another. It’s great that Heller managed to combine her skills, and express her art in various methods. There are times when collaboration between artists is willed, and can produce great works to share with people. Picture books are one wonderful example where a writer can collaborate with an illustrator. As a writer, I often have the desire to collaborate with visual artists. According to Heller, observation is key, then comes expression. An observer has an eye for details, and could have the desire to express. Looking at photograph or painting alone is usually not enough, especially of an artist wants to portray an idea. I absolutely agree with Heller on joining forces with other artists. Creating that shared space and artworks between artists or educators would definitely intensify the experience, and bring forth profound works.
Rob Garret wrote an inspirational piece on freeing our minds. I found myself agreeing with everything he said; the statements he pointed out. I absorbing his information, rather than reflected on it. What he said is clear, and direct. It seemed to me like it was a series of inspirational quotes. They should be taken into consideration. I have taken the liberty of collecting, and writing down his remarks that resonate with me. I have saved his short Free Your Mind article for future reference. The following notions of Garret would be superb on digital or regular postcards:
- Art has the ability to radicalize thought.
- Public art involves meaningful engagement.
- Artworks, images, and symbols reinforces belief within individuals.
- Art is making some sort of statement, especially when it is public art.
- Art can help shape the lives of others.
- Art challenges the notions they are built on.
- Art’s distinctive power stretches beyond political or issue-based statements or pieces, it is a fragment of someone’s imagination offering an alternative or hope.
- Art causes us to reflect on who we area and how we relate to others.
- Individual artworks can challenge common sense.
